PKP events in 2024

For the first edition of our Community Newsletter of 2025, we are happy to reflect on the events PKP hosted and participated in during 2024.

Events, especially in-person, allow PKP to get closer to our community. They also represent an opportunity to share experiences with community members and new users worldwide, which is why they are a crucial part of PKP activities during the year.

In 2024 PKP organized 23 events, online and in person. These events covered a variety of topics, some of them to inform the community about news on development and others as part of the educational resources that PKP makes available to its users. In addition, five of these events aimed to gather feedback on Documentation and PKP school and implement improvements in those areas.

PKP News and Reporting events

In May, PKP held its Annual General Meeting (AGM), where the team reflected on the milestones achieved in areas like Finance, UI/UX, and Development, and included a presentation reassuring the community that PKP will not be sold.

To keep the community up to date with news, PKP’s development team held four Quarterly Development News Webinars, that you can rewatch on PKP’s YouTube channel

PKP and Coalition Publica webinars

One of the most important parts of PKP revolves around knowledge sharing. This is why PKP and Coalition Publica host several webinars that can be accessed from anywhere in the world and that touch on topics that publishers have shown interest in, such as improving their use of the software and implementing good editorial and scholarly practices in journals using OJS.

  1. Getting Found Staying Found: Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) and their value
  2. Accessibility in OJS software and publications
  3. Peer Review in Review: What’s Coming for OJS
  4. Enhancing Journal Integrity with the Publication Facts Label for OJS
  5. All Together Now: Toward Partnerships for Open Access
  6. About Blooming time! Implementing ORCID

Events co-hosted with organizations and institutions

PKP is always looking for opportunities to get closer to its community, one of the best ways to do this is by working with organizations and institutions that share our mission to welcome the community in several events in different regions. This year, the events that were co-hosted with other institutions were:

  1. All you need to know about adopting ORCID and OJS: A webinar for journal publishers in Indonesia – cohosted with ORCID and Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN)
  2. Invite to the Indonesia ORCID OJS User Community, cohosted with  ORCID (access the recording)
  3. LPF 2024 Pre-Conference Event, co-hosted with the Library Publishing Coalition

PKP in-person events

In 2024, PKP hosted two Sprints. A PKP sprint is a hands-on, community-driven in-person gathering, usually two or three days in length, where participants work in groups on agreed-upon projects related to our software or learning materials.

The University of Minnesota Libraries welcomed the PKP Community and team for our first sprint of the year, where six groups got together to work on topics like Continuous Publication, Accessibility, and Open Peer Review, among others. You can read our Minnesota 2024 Sprint and LPF Pre-Conference Event roundup post to learn more.

In October,  54 participants from the community came together in Turin, hosted by the University of Turin and the CRAFT-OA project, to continue working on improvements to PKP Software. This time, some of the eight groups continued with topics started in Minnesota, and others opened new conversions around OMP, Multilingualism, and Typesetting. Aside from the Sprints, PKP had three other in-person events to connect with the Indonesian Community. In August 2024, the PKP team imparted OJS upgrading, Plugin, and Editorial Workflow Workshops in Jakarta and Makassar.

PKP Global Presence

In addition to all the events that PKP organizes, the PKP team is always looking forward to being present at important events in the field of research, scholarly publishing, and Open Access, such as Software Freedom Day, Open Access Week, the Charleston Conference, the Frankfurt Book Fair, the Diamond Open Access Global Summit, the Bogotá Book Fair, Open education week, Researcher to Reader (R2R) conference, Foro LATAM  de Ciencia Abierta, and the Public launch of the European Diamond Capacity Hub and the ALMASI Project, among others.
