About

OUR STORY

PKP was formed out of the internet’s original promise of a greater democratization of knowledge in an Age of Information. Its members continue to develop tools that are bringing about more equitable global participation in, and partaking of, this form of knowledge. Our research also contributes to these very questions of how research and scholarship work in the world. Over the last two decades, we have seen this mission of increasing public access to carefully reviewed and vetted research grow in importance as a counterforce to the online rise of misinformation.

IT’S OPEN SOURCE AND OPEN ACCESS

From the outset, PKP has been building publishing platforms, including OJS, OMP, and OPS, using free and open source software (FOSS) principles and licensing. In seeking to support the publishing of open access journals and books, as well as preprint posting, PKP is part of a scholarly publishing ecosystem providing infrastructure that is as open as the science that will benefit from such systems.

Our Organizational Values

PKP is building an organization in which everyone is able to bring their full selves to this work, knowing that they’ll be heard, championed, and supported to succeed. We seek to bring together diversity in race, age, physical and mental ability, sexuality, gender identity, ethnicity, perspectives, and ideas.rnrnThe PKP team works to honor and expand people’s right to know through research and scholarship, even as we recognize that these are not the only forms that knowledge takes. We continue to explore and develop innovations in scholarly publishing that will ensure, if not increase, the rigor and integrity of research. And we participate with industry organizations in the setting of scholarly standards.

The Accessibility Interest Group (AIG) has recently reviewed and improved the accessibility of PKP software for all users. Learn more about the AIG.

The Documentation Interest Group (DIG) creates and improves the many guides that have been developed to assist those using PKP software. Learn more about the DIG.

Other topics and areas of growth are under consideration. Staff and community members are invited to come together and propose a working group. Contact us to be a part of this work.

Our people

PKP employs a globally distributed and highly talented workforce of community support professionals, systems administrators, software developers, social science researchers, academic librarians, and university students.

How we work

As a research and development initiative within Simon Fraser University’s Core Facilities Program, PKP has developed a sustainable financial model and an effective and equitable governance structure for managing its operations, along with partnerships with key constituents in the scholarly communication landscape, all of which align with and further PKP’s mission of making knowledge public.

PKP continues to be sustained by membership contributions from a global array of organizations, by revenues from its hosting and other services, and by research grants awarded to the project.

PKP operates with oversight from both internal and international committees, as well as from Simon Fraser University, while adhering to the PKP Community Code of Conduct.

PKP has initiated and maintained partnerships with a number of key professional organizations and associations that are vital to the effectiveness of scholarly communication.
